European Union Imposes Arms Embargo On Guinea

The European Union has enforced arms embargo and sanctions against Guinea’s military leaders, according to BBC News. When troops opened fire on protesters last month there was a violation of human rights. Rights groups say 157 protesters died in the African nation, but officials say 57 people died.

The protests stemmed from rumors that Capt Moussa Dadis, who assumed power via a coup in December, plans to run for president next year. This month, EU Development Chief Karel de Gucht said the leader should faces trials for crimes against humanity. The International Criminal Court is investigating the deaths and the United Nations has opened an inquiry. The West African regional economic body already imposed an arms embargo.
