Target Going the Costco Route?

Over the next seven weeks, Target will now be offering consumable items including paper towels, toilet paper, toothpaste and granola bars in bulk packaging. The change has been driven by the recession, as customers are less interested in buying fashion and apparel items, and more in must have items such as household goods, Dow Jones Newswires reports. Target has not commented on whether this will be a permanent change to it’s merchandising, however the bulk items will be available in all Target stores until February 21, 2010, without any membership fee usually found in a warehouse club.

In addition, for a limited time, 1,000 Target stores will offer apparel not regularly carried by the retailer, with labels including discounted shirts by Calvin Klein and Polo Ralph Lauren, and Ed Hardy handbags.
