Swiss company Cosmetochem is planning to get two ingredients from Aboriginal crops fair trade certification. The ingredients, Kakadu plum and desert raisin (bush tomato), are used in the beauty brand Outback Spirit Botanicals. Cosmetochem’s Dr. Jane Tiedtke told Cosmetics Design that if they gain fair trade certification for these two ingredients, they could pursue the certification for others Aboriginal products, which are often from fruits sourced by the native people of Australia.

Outback Spirit Botanicals Owner and Outback Spirit Foundation Founder Juleigh Robins told CD: “Until now fair trade certification has been focused on third world producers in third world countries. But we have come to appreciate that fair trade has the capacity to improve the lives and outcome for…indigenous people that live in first world countries, like Australian Aboriginal people.”
