New Product Review: Clif Mojo & Luna Bars

Every fall the Expo East wellness and health food convention brings retailers, writers and product developers together to showcase existing and new products. Just a few years ago I spoke to a man about chips that were made in an unconventional manner. Two years later Pop chips have a following across the nation, including in Hollywood. One of the earliest energy/snack bar companies, CLIF, is always present. This past October we got word that they’d be releasing some new bars and adding new flavors and formulations to existing brands. These are all in stores now. Here are details.

Bars like these remind me 200 calorie snacks can be satisfying. Expecting moms that just learned only 300 extra calories a day are authorized can now rejoice. The Mojo Bar is a sweet nutty “Trail Mix Bar” that now comes in a clear wrapper.  A blend of nuts, pretzel pieces, raisins, seeds and chocolate chips, the MOJO bar is a sweet and savory snack that is sweetened with brown rice and oat syrups. My favorite is the Peanut Butter Pretzel bar but all are satisfying, 70% organic, and like other Clif Bar products, GMO-free.

LUNA Protein is a rich, high protein bar geared at women. The brand released two new flavors to market in February: Mint Chocolate Chip and Chocolate. The former is a blend of peppermint and chocolate nougat and chocolate chips, while the latter is comprised of the chocolate base with chocolate chips and crisps.  LUNA Protein has 12 grams of protein and three grams of fiber, in addition to calcium (25% RDA), iron (15% RDA), and folic acid (30% RDA).  The original LUNA Protein flavors include : Chocolate Peanut Butter, Cookie Dough and Chocolate Cherry Almond.  While there is a slight aftertaste, these are a great option to rival candy bars. Though the calorie count might not be much lower than a standard candy bar, they have much less fat and a far lower glycemic index.

Finally, the original LUNA bar line expanded last month with two new flavors, Chocolate Dipped Coconut and Chocolate Chunk. Also 70% organic and GMO-free, these are great to keep at work, in your car, and in your work or diaper bag for adults or kids. LUNA also comes in a Mini size, which only has 80 calories.
